4×4 Overlander

Fuel Storage

Overland travel can mean much greater distances between fuel stations (can be up to several hundred miles) and additionally the extra weight and the rougher terrain  can drastically reduce the mpg achieved.
The formula for amount of fuel to be carried can be found in Tom Sheppards, Vehicle dependent Expedition Guide.  Briefly – fuel required = [(D x TF) +25%+ 100 miles]/mpg
Where D = anticipated distance
TF = Terrain Factor ranging from 1 to 2 for sand dunes
+25%+100 miles = reserve for diversions etc
Mpg = anticipated mpg note that normal mpg can be halved in soft terrain.

In Europe you are rarely more then 30-50 miles away from a fuel station, whereas in more remote places that could extend to several hundred miles.  In Europe, a standard fuel tank and a jerry can is normally sufficient. For the overland traveller, extra fuel is required to be carried and the ubiquitous jerry-can is no longer sufficient  Jerry cans stored inside the vehicle takes up valuable space and stored on the roof could cause possible problems with a raised centre of gravity.  Good practice for the overland traveller is to top up your fuel tanks  whenever possible.
Fuel storage solutions for the long distance overland traveller include larger main tanks, wing tanks which gravity feed into the main tank and cill pods which need to be pumped into the main fuel tank.

Replacement 110 litre main tanks are available in mild steel, stainless steel or aluminium for Defenders, Discoveries and Range Rovers.
